5 Reasons You Hate Tofu and How to Change That August 24, 2021

by Hattie How to cook

There was once a time this soy-based meat replacement was something only a fully-fledged plant head would eat. Now, with more opportunity to try tofu, we’ve warmed to this deliciously versatile vegan food.

Hungry? Check out these tofu recipes and make tonight’s dinner a success.

But we know not everyone is convinced. If the thought of tofu still has your stomach turning, we’ve listed the top reasons why and what to do to nail that perfectly crisp and chewy bite.

It’s too squishy

Newsflash: tofu doesn’t have to be rubbery. The trick is to place your block of tofu between kitchen roll (or anything to absorb the liquid – a tea towel would work too), then place a heavy object or apply pressure to the block of tofu. This will release all of the liquid and leave you with tofu ready for cooking.

It’s too spongy

Does your tofu end up in a spongy, squidgy mess? The key here is to chop it into small cubes – roughly 2cm – the smaller it is, the crispier it will become.

It’s not crispy enough

The perfect crispy tofu can be pretty elusive at times. The secret? Don’t forget to add starch!

Simply chop your tofu into small pieces, toss together with cornflour and fry on a medium-high heat. You’ll have lovely golden brown, crispy tofu bites in no time.

There’s no flavour

This one’s easy – don’t skip the seasoning! Once you’ve fried off your tofu, add a marinade of your choice. Let it bubble on the heat and get nice and sticky. Our Korean-style tofu rice bowl is a great place to start – it combines chipotle paste with rice vinegar, easy ginger, garlic and soy sauce for a deliciously salty and spicy dish.

You don’t know what to make with it
