Our Sweetest Supplier: The Local Honeyman

by Trisha The Fresh Faces

On Pancake Day, we were honoured by the presence of our honey suppliers: The Local Honeyman. We met Curtis, the founder and his right hand woman, Sarah and they explained how they make their organic, local, unblended, unpasteurised and coarse filtered, ethical honey (WOW!). Needless to say, we’re so proud to have their honey in our boxes. Thanks for featuring us on your blog guys!

So, Curtis, how did you get into honey?

Well, I used to work in banking for a number of years in Canary Wharf but it just wasn’t for me.  I became disillusioned with the industry and wanted to build a business based on my big love and hobby – beekeeping.  I started out with three hives and five years on we now have a thriving small business based in East London, with over 120 hives across London and Essex and associations with other local ethical beekeepers.

We are proud to know where our honey comes from and how it’s made. It’s 100% pure, raw and local. It’s cold extracted, coarse filtered, unblended and unpasteurized unlike the supermarkets’ honeys.  It’s the way nature and honey bees intend it to be.

What’s the weirdest or funniest thing that’s happened since you started?

Being stung in my armpit while beekeeping in a pair of shorts and a vest. I can tell you it brought a tear to my eye. I always insist on wearing a t- shirt at the bare minimum now.

Who is your role model and why?

My uncle Henry. He first started keeping honey bees on Hackney Nature Reserve in London at the beginning of the year 2000. He introduced the skill of keeping bees to me and I have since then carried on the trade.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what two items would you take with you and why?

The first one would have to be a large beehive with my best colony of bees inside, because honey is the only food that includes all the substances necessary to sustain life, including enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and water; and it’s the only food that contains “pinocembrin”, an antioxidant associated with improved brain functioning. This would allow me to survive, assuming the island had a lot of trees and flowers, so the bee could make honey.

Second item would be a mobile phone, so I could call for help!

Honey and Mustard Glazed PorkWhat is your favourite HelloFresh recipe?

Honey and mustard glazed pork with apple lentils.  This is such a lovely dish and a favourite here at Local Honey Man HQ.  Our borage honey adds such a lovely sweetness to this classic combination with the mustard and pork.  It’s so quick and easy to make too and full of flavour and nutrition.

How did you first start working with HelloFresh?

Laura, a head buyer at HelloFresh saw our honey on sale at the London Farmer’s market in Brixton and got in contact with us.
