Top Foods to Keep You Cool in a Heatwave

“I can’t stop sweating”, “it’s too hot”, “I don’t even own shorts” – just a snippet of the conversations overheard at HelloFresh HQ today. As the heatwave fast approaches, we’re all looking for ways to keep our cool.

Staying hydrated is a no brainer. However, the more you sweat, the more water you lose, which is not good news in this heat. Plus, drinking too much water can cause a critical loss of vitamins and minerals as they get whooshed out of the body with every trip to the loo.

The solution? Eating hydration-promoting foods and making simple changes to what you drink. Here are our top picks that will have you feeling cool as a cucumber during these hotter weeks.

    1. Salads

Salads are the perfect summer dish and, since they’re packing on fruit and veg, they are also great for your hydration. Try a recipe like our Freekehishly Healthy Salad made with pomegranates, which are a wonderfully hydrating source of antioxidants.

          2. Watermelon popsicles

Watermelon is one of the most hydrating foods you can eat. Chop ‘em up and pop them on ice lolly sticks. Simple.

    1. Smoothie bowls

Next time you wake up feeling hot and bothered, try a cooling smoothie bowl. Great for breakfast or as a snack, we’ve opted for a pineapple smoothie because of the fruit’s hydrating elements.

Simply blend the pineapple with mango, one whole banana and ice (although not needed if you’re using frozen fruit). Plus you can keep your hollowed-out pineapple and use it as a pretty bowl. Hydrating and Instagrammable.

    1. Lime Ice Cubes

In the heat, ice is necessary. Next time you’re filling your ice tray, fill half the mould with lime juice and add a thin slice of cucumber to each cube and then fill the rest with water and freeze until solid.

Not only does this add flavour to your drink (handy when you’re guzzling water like no tomorrow), lime and cucumber are great for rejuvenating the skin. Good news for when you’re not feeling fresh after a day in the heat!

You can also cut up a couple of your favourite citrus fruits into wedges (limes, lemons, oranges and grapefruit) and pop them into the freezer on a baking tray. Add them to a lime and elderflower cordial when frozen, and you’ve got yourself a delicious hydrating drink.
