Have you ever tried to prepare oysters at home? You might think that these succulent shellfish are best left to the professionals, but you can cook them yourself for a special treat. Here are our favourite tips for this most luxurious type of seafood.

    How to cook oysters

Many connoisseurs prefer to eat oysters raw, which might be overwhelming for newcomers. Luckily, there are a few different ways to cook them.

Regardless of your preparation method, the first step involves shucking the oysters. Ask your fishmonger politely, and they may assist you with this. But if you wish to attempt it yourself, first you’ll need a sturdy knife. Hold the oyster in a thick cloth for protection, as the sharp edges can cause cuts, then insert the knife into the pointed end of the oyster (the hinge). When it’s firmly in place, slowly move it up and down like a lever to open the oyster.

How to cook oysters in a pan

Pan-fried oysters are a delicacy, and while it might not be the most refined way to enjoy them, it’s surprisingly delicious. For a crispy coating, dip the oysters in flour, followed by beaten egg, and finally panko breadcrumbs. Pan-fry them in a few centimetres of oil, then blot them dry before serving.

How to cook oysters in the oven

Baking oysters is a favourite culinary hack. By preparing them this way, you can avoid the hassle of shucking, as they will naturally open up in the oven. Just place the oysters on a baking tray and cook them at 200°C for ten minutes. They’ll open up slightly in the oven. Take them out, let them cool, and finish the job with a spoon.

How to cook oysters in the shell

Oysters Rockefeller are great starter for a decadent dinner party, that also prepares the oysters while in the shell. Arrange the oysters in half shells, top them with a blend of butter, herbs, and breadcrumbs, and quickly grill them. Don’t leave them under the grill for too long – you just want the breadcrumbs to develop a rich golden colour.

To eat an oyster, simply:

    • Hold the oyster shell horizontally: the liquid in it, which is called the oyster liquor, is a real delicacy and should be savoured along with the meat, as well as your topping.
    • Lift the shell up to your mouth and tip it in: use your tongue to pull the oyster away if necessary.
    • Try this for a taste of true luxury: wash your oyster down with a glass of champagne.
