5 Simple Food Substitions for Healthy Living

A lot of people say that eating less is the only way to be healthier. We don’t believe that’s true, at all! Sometimes eating more of the right stuff and less of the wrong stuff, is a better solution. So, instead of
eating less, why not replace something unhealthy with something better? It’s simple and it makes a difference!

What’s the trick to healthy living?

Don’t worry we’re not suggesting that you replace chips with kale. We adore a bit of kale, but it’s hardly the same thing. Fad diets are pointless, the best path to healthy living is to change your habits to such a small extent that it’s natural and it doesn’t make you feel like you’re missing out. So, here are 5 unhealthy foods that we eat a lot of in the UK, and we’re suggesting 5 very similar foods to replace them with that taste great but are just that little bit more nutritious and less deep fried or sugar filled.

Additionally, if you’re Achilles heel is chips or crisps, you can still have them once in a while, but maybe just not as your go to snack. Nothing in this world could make me give up prawn cocktail crisps, but they’re a lovely treat just once in a while.

    What about exercise?

To keep your heart and body healthy, exercise is really crucial. But if you’re exercising but still eating all the bad stuff, you’re likely to be taking one step forward and two steps back. You know what they say – everything in moderation. So, we’d recommend adding a bit of exercise and eating a bit healthier as an effective way to feel better, rather than an intensive diet or exercise routine which will wear you down after about a week.

    Dukkah

Tip: Sprinkle it on your soup for a crunchy substitute for croutons.

Dukkah (pronounced DOO-kah) is a traditional spice blend from Egypt made from a mixture of lovely crunchy nuts and seeds, as well as tasty spices and herbs.

    Popcorn

Tip: Make your popcorn and sprinkle on some salt and spices like zahtar or paprika for extra flavour.

If you’re feeling more in the mood for something sweet, you can add some honey or cinnamon powder. Delicious!

    Brown Rice

Tip: Use brown rice instead of white rice for curries or any other rice based dish.

    Dark Chocolate

Tip: Eat it plain or add it into any recipes which call for milk chocolate. We think dark chocolate is a lot better for cooking and baking anyway!

    Veggie Chips

Tip: Use carrots, courgettes or swede. Peel them and cut into chip like strips. Roast at 190 degrees C for 45 minutes with olive oil and salt.
